FreshRSS 1.11.1 has just been released!

It is a quick release to fix a regression introduced in 1.11.0, as well as various other bugs. But in addition, this version does come with a few noteworthy goodies :-)

Notable changes:
* Better support of media: tags such as thumbnails and descriptions (e.g. for YouTube)
* Built-in extension to fix Tumblr feeds from European Union due to #gdpr
* Fix regression in fetching full articles content
* Fix several bugs in the new Fever API
* Etc. See the release notes for details: https://github.com/FreshRSS/FreshRSS/releases/tag/1.11.1

As usual, it is already available for git and Docker update methods, and will soon be available by auto-zip-update when @marien has pushed the changes to the update server :-)

Thanks again to all the #freshrss contributors 👍🏻 (6 in this mini release)

Facebook, Google 'manipulate' users to share data despite EU law: Norwegian study

Facebook and Google are pushing users to share private information by offering "invasive" and limited default options despite new EU data protection laws aimed at giving users more control and choice, a Norwegian government study said Wednesday.

The Norwegian Consumer Council found that the US tech giants' privacy updates clash with the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which forces companies to clarify what choices people have when sharing private information.

"These companies manipulate us into sharing information about ourselves," the council's director of digital services, Finn Myrstad, said in a statement.

"(This) is at odds with the expectations of consumers and the intention of the new Regulation," the 2018 study, entitled "Deceived By Design", concluded.

Myrstad said the practices showed "a lack of respect for their users, and are circumventing the notion of giving consumers control of their personal data".

The case for the new laws has been boosted by the recent scandal over the harvesting of Facebook users' data by British consultancy Cambridge Analytica for the 2016 US presidential election.

Information for the report was collected from mid-April to early June, a few weeks after the EU rules came into force.

The report exposed that #Facebook and #Google often set the least privacy-friendly option as a default and that users rarely change pre-selected settings.

Privacy-friendly choices "require more clicks and are often hidden," it said.

"In many cases, the services obscure the fact that users have very few actual choices, and that comprehensive data sharing is accepted just by using the service," the study said.

But Facebook on Wednesday denied covering up the options for users and said they had prepared for 18 months to meet the GDPR requirements.

"We have made our policies clearer, our privacy settings easier to find and introduced better tools for people to access, download, and delete their information," the company's spokesman told Norwegian public broadcaster NRK.

The EU has billed the GDPR as the biggest shake-up of data privacy regulations since the birth of the web.

**The social media giant and Google separately already face their first official complaints under the new law after an Austrian privacy campaigner accused them of forcing users to give their consent to the use of their personal information.

Companies can be fined up to 20 million euros or four percent of annual global turnover for breaching the strict new data rules for the European Union, a market of 500 million people.**

Does #GDPR covers me as a French national but US resident? I don’t think so but I’m not an expert.

I love the hypocrisy of Microzon Facegoopple and their ilk regarding #GDPR and similar regulations.

Corp: Selling user data is ok and users are perfectly fine with it, because they get their personalized ads. Precious precious personalized ads.

EU: Ok, then show them this information clearly and ask them for consent explicitly.

Corp: OH NOES THAT WILL TURN USERS AWAY!!1!

EU: Wait, I thought users wanted it? You wouldn't be lying about that, would you, eh?

Demain c'est #GDPR day 🇪🇺. Mais en Irlande 🇮🇪 se sera aussi un référendum day.

Référendum pour abroger le 8eme amendement de la constitution qui rend illégal l'avortement.

Donc c'est carrément important en fait

Mr Zuckerberg pretends that the people can quit Facebook with a complete archive of their data. That is false! The @Facebook archive is empty of any link (even those that are supposed to be saved) and conversations (no comments even your owns on your own posts). Facebook archive is useless for other online services! Conclusion: the result of our digital labor has been stolen by Facebook! How Mr Zuckerberg can pretend that Facecebook is #GDPR compliant?

We are currently working on figuring out how the #GDPR will effect #Mastodon

We have reached out and asked for help from #EFF ( @eff ).

Currently there's a discussion on the projects GitHub, and if you know anything that may help us that's the place to go. Please try to read the conversation before pitching in though!

Hey mastodon admins, the 25th may is coming closer and so the #GDPR. I don't think the Data Protection Authorities will be a big problem at the moment, they are also overwhelmed by the new regulations and they would try to solve the problem in a favorable way before sanctioning an instance.
The real problem will be lawyers trying to gain money from instances which don't follow the regulations imposed by the GDPR. So the big question is, what do we need to do to comply these rules? #mastoadmin

It might seem a bit extreme but I removed #GoogleAnalytics from my site. Do I need it? No. Is it worth the trouble for me? No. Did it bring me anything useful? No.

Less data processed => easier #GDPR compliance.

Facebook did not ask for your PRIOR CONSENT, as sharing your data is "permitted" by default. Likewise, your consent…
