Not sure if no one from #Mastodon reacts to my posts because #federation with #Friendica is broken or because they are uninteresting/irrelevant.

At @lightone 's request, I wrote a blurb about what it would take to protect user's private data from their node admin on a decentralized social network node. I use #Friendica as a reference (extending this Friendica GitHub issue about encrypting data at rest), but this applies to #Mastodon, #Diaspora and #Hubzilla as well.
Let me know what you think about it. #cryptography #decentralization #socialnetworking

Friendica 2018.05 released
Friendica 2018.05 released Dear Federation, the Friendica team is pleased to announce the release of Friendica The Tazmans Flax-lily 2018.05. Back on track with scheduled releases, after 3.6 took such a long time. In this release we have packed some bug fixes and enhancements. After an incompatibility glitch with the last release, Friendica 2018.05 is now again compatible with PHP 5.6. However we recommend using a more recent PHP version to further enhance the performance gain from the ongoing overhaul of the Friendica code and processes. Obviously GDPR was one thing we concentrated on for this release. Identifying problems in existing features (e.g. account and node mobility), adding new features (see below) and making things more transparent. To make a long story short, here a list of the noteworthy changes since the last release: Finnish translation was added to the repository from Transifex. With it, Friendica now has 20 localizations from which 11 have more then 80% of the co...diaspote.org
With 6 open pull requests against #Friendica on #GitHub, I'm calling it a night. I want to keep on going with a couple of tasks, but my server currently is a mess of manually updated files for testing all the different branches. #WebDevLife
Dammit, and I just moved to Flickr. Back to square one, I suppose.
I’m now looking for an iOS app with the same picture editing features as Instagram without any upload capabilities, I’ll post them myself on #Friendica.

If someone is seeking support over the downtime; there is an email list, room in the IRC #friendica at irc.freenode.net and rooms at #friendi.ca or #friendica at matrix.org.
I’ve completed a cool niche feature for #Friendica but I can’t submit it until I’ve written extensive documentation for it, ugh.

Well but the the strikethrough is not working in #Friendica.

Thanks, but I can't be bothered with hosting a Python application. I am confortable hosting PHP apps only which I already do (#Friendica and #NextCloud). I'm not a sysadmin at heart.
#Mastodon friends: Can you separately set a CW on your toots and mark them as sensitive? If yes, do you regularly do both? If yes, why?
The reason I ask is that Mastodon tacks on the#nsfw hashtag on outgoing posts marked as "sensitive" to #Friendica. I have a local filter that collapses posts with the #nsfw hashtag and lately it's been triggered by random posts about politics and technology that have been marked as "sensitive" and protected by a CW.

In the #DeleteFacebook spirit, I'm looking for an #Instagram replacement. I'm using the following features:
Thank you for your suggestions!
- Basic lighting filter and tilt shift
- Multi-picture layouts
- Follow and like
- API to crosspost on #Friendica, either by RSS or IFTTT trigger
- iOS app
Thank you for your suggestions!
#Friendica version 3.6 has released! This is the biggest update so far in Friendica's history in term of code changes, with a nice string of new features and years-old bugs fixed! @FriendicaNews
A Facebook recruiter reached out to me personally on LinkedIn. Tough luck, 18 months ago I might have considered an offer. Since then I have been locked out of my FB account, I discovered #Friendica and Trump got elected thanks in part to inflammatory news virality. 🙅♂️
"Over the past twelve months, 32 developers contributed new code to #Friendica. This is one of the largest open-source teams in the world, and is in the top 2% of all project teams on Open Hub."

The first lines of source code were added to Friendica in 2010. Projects with recent activity, and a code base more than five years old are likely solving vital problems and delivering consistent value, and may be organized to reward sustained effort by an engaged team of contributors. After this week-end during which I banged hard on my production #Friendica instance, I would like to commend its resilience as I don't seem to have missed any post, comment or notification even as my instance was often unavailable for minutes at a time.

So, we start to talk #fosdem with the other #thefederation friends. Will there be a #decentralized room again this year @nitot ? Will it be bigger than the previous year? Or should we set up one only for the decentralized social networks, with #diaspora #mastodon #friendica #matrix etc...? @Gargron do you plan to come to the #fosdem2018 ?

Today I finally shut down my #Diaspora pod and my #Hubzilla server. Diaspora* is built on a stack that is completely foreign to me, which prevents me from understanding what is going on or making any meaningful open-source contributions. I wanted to send a last Diaspora* status to announce the shutdown, but due to a recent tightening in my server's file permissions I did, no CSS nor JS files were loading, and I had no idea why.
Hubzilla on the contrary is built on a very familiar PHP stack, but the philosophy of the project is bigger than my needs, which means that I was utterly confused when I tried to set up my profile.
So, in terms of decentralized social media, #Friendica it is for me. Its core development team is little but active, I can contribute meaningful improvements and the project scope is slightly larger than Diaspora while remaining manageable for me.
I still feel slightly isolated as a US-based user, and in the future I'd like that we find a way to allow more network traversal to find and interact with public posts, contacts of contacts, and such.
Cheers!
