@aral I think this is what Richard Stallman meant when he said that #FreeSoftware and #OpenSource Software are not always the same thing. Sure, #Google is creating #Chrome in the open but when they restrict your ability to run ethical ad blockers, it is not Free.

Right now, I'm trying out many non-Chromium based browsers to find the one I like best. I'm not Firefox's biggest fan since they take money from Google but YouTube works better on it than Gnome Web. Coinsidence? NO!

“How many ad blocks could an ad slinger block if an ad slinger could block blocks?

Google engineers have proposed changes to the open-source Chromium browser that will break content-blocking extensions, including various ad blockers … Adblock Plus will most likely not be affected”

https://www.theregister.co.uk/2019/01/22/google_chrome_browser_ad_content_block_change/

PS. Guess who gets millions from Google not to block Google?

Hint: A_block _lus.

@aral I didn't install #Chrome when I re-installed #Linux on my laptop and I haven't missed that ugly thing one bit.

I've created a #userstyle for Mastodon (and works with #Humblr) to make columns a bit #wider and shows full images/thumbnails rather than the fixed cropped #thumbnails you get by default.

Install the #Stylus extension in #Chrome (https://goo.gl/RsGjeC) and then install my User Style from here: https://userstyles.org/styles/167207

This "security guide" is mind-boggling. Use #iThings instead of an #Android/Linux device (ideally with a custom ROM), and even instead of a laptop?!? Use #Chrome (not Chromium, *Chrome*) and a #Chromebook?!? #WTF

Neither #Firefox nor #Chrome seem to be made for users who keep their browser running for several days without a restart.

Firefox just now: 12GB RAM usage.
After restart and reloading all previous tabs: 2GB RAM usage.

Either that's a huge memory leak or I just don't understand what it's caching there.

Why I’m done with Chrome – A Few Thoughts on Cryptographic Engineering - https://blog.cryptographyengineering.com/2018/09/23/why-im-leaving-chrome/

I left #Chrome a long time ago. #Firefox is not only better, but I also don't feel like being a product while using it.

Why I’m done with Chrome

What changed?

A few weeks ago Google shipped an update to Chrome that fundamentally changes the sign-in experience. From now on, every time you log into a Google property (for example, Gmail), Chrome will automatically sign the browser into your Google account for you. It’ll do this without asking, or even explicitly notifying you. (However, and this is important: Google developers claim this will not actually start synchronizing your data to Google — yet. See further below.)

Your sole warning — in the event that you’re looking for it — is that your Google profile picture will appear in the upper-right hand corner of the browser window.
